CIA Factbook: Basic statistics on Dominican Republic.
Oh, all right. London-born Gibraltarian with an inter-continental family background and convoluted life-story who has complicated matters even further by marrying a Dominican, known on this blog as Mr. C.
Our son, known here somewhat cloyingly as Chirimoyito (little Chirimoya) will never forgive me, either for the nickname or for the tangled heritage I’ve lumbered him with. The only Dominican-Gibraltarian in captivity, as far as we know.
Never one to be decisive about my path in life, I’ve worked as a waitress, life model, journalist (newspaper, magazines and radio), English teacher to the Venezuelan elite, Eurobrats and Japanese students; charity fundraiser, communications officer and programme assistant for an international development organisation; fundraising and communications adviser to Dominican campesino groups; and interpreter to rock stars. Well, one rock star, unless you count the drummer.
Since becoming a mother, I left full-time employment and started working from home as a freelance writer, translator and editor, and sometimes take on fundraising or communications-related assignments for international development agencies in the Dominican Republic, the Caribbean and Central America. My work has taken me to Haiti and Guyana, Guatemala and Mexico as well as the south western DR in recent months.
My first love is travel, some of which I’ve done under my own steam, the rest as part of my work. Much of the world still remains unexplored and is likely to remain so for the foreseeable future, but I did manage to see most of Latin America, Europe and the Middle East before settling down.
She is a voyager. In life and in mind. Both ways of travelling are equally important. Born and raised in Sweden, but never limited to any borders. The world is a big playground, and she is ready to explore. While in Europe she worked with production of events. Art, music, concerts, opera, ballet…
Long tours with hundreds of people involved like Rhapsody in Rock, grand concerts on the birthday of the Swedish crown princess, struggling rehersals with ballet stars like Maya Plisetsaya, pop concerts in Russia with Alla Pugacheva, making the first Astrid Lindgren play ever in Moscow on the Childrens theatre happen, wonderful opera performances that put life on the edge and joyful circus performances by Yuri Nikolin that leads your mind to children and the love every child deserve. She was also responsible for productions such as handling the Scandinavian market for events such as icehockey world championship in Switzerland, Soccer World championship in Italy and other events of the same kind. Although she knows nothing about sports.
A life that always include meetings with people from all over the world, where the bond is creativity. A bond that sometimes never breaks and instead grows and form a deep friendship. A wonderful world of colors, and hard work during long hours. She still belongs in that world. Photography where moments of reality are in focus, web & graphical design and words articles or nothing at all, fills her daily life.
She wanted more. And she wanted something different. She wanted growth and she wanted to see other things in life. From the outside, but also from within. She wanted another path, a little slower and possibly closer to life and to nature. So she decided to start another chapter of her life. The inner voyage, and maybe somewhere else. That is when the Caribbean chapters of her life began.
She is still there today, living life to the fullest, on a small tropical island where the Atlantic ocean ends, mostly wearing flip flops.
Hello everyone! Welcome to this blog where we will take you on a virtual tour across this beautiful caribbean island, a paradise close in our hearts and at the same time far away (although not that much!) on the maps.
We will talk about tourism, of course; about the fascinating hotels next to wonderful beaches surrounded by palm trees, about visiting colonial cities full of history, about food and cuisine with a caribbean twist…
We will also talk about landscapes and corners of the country little known by mass tourism, but full of beauty and authenticity, and of course about the Dominican people, their sympathy and their envy to live life with true caribbean joy. Finally, for those who are seriously thinking about relocating in the Dominican Republic, we will be posting useful information about housing and real estate.
Also: Maps, information about dominican cities and useful tips about subjects such as travel, visas, work permits, and of course education, health and medical assistance.
And many more things: be patient as we will be doing our best to make comments and ask questions, as we will answer as soon as we can.
